My Grandfather, William Leslie John (AKA John L) POW No27914 Army no 3961647. He was in Lamsdorf. He joined The Royal Welsh in 1939 and then to The 9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry we believe it was C Company.
Here are some of the places he served: Tobruk, Mareth Line Tripoly battle of Mersa Matruh, Eldaba, Fuka, Halfaya pass to name a few.
He was captured in Sicily on MT Etna after been shot in the leg and a German Doctor saved is life and told him “For you the war is over”. Moved to Stalag 8b and worked down the mine.
He has told me a little of The Long March but I feel its to hard for him to recall what they had to endure on the march.
Still going strong at 92 years young.
